Thoughtful gifts from Nonsamran School

Last week, a package of 10 pieces of handwoven cotton cloth was sent to Panpim. Along with the cloths, some thank-you letters were enclosed.

We didn't hope or expect for such big gifts. I have reiterated a few times (with the school director) that we do not want anything in return. Letters of thanks will suffice.

So I am guessing that they sent these as tokens of their appreciations. After all, they are hand-woven by the villagers. On my trip there last December, I visited their small weaving shack.

It is very hard to decide who will receive these gifts. So after careful consideration, I think top 10 contributors will receive a piece. Mr. Em will receive my share.

I hate to weigh the choice based on "the monetary value," but there are no other ways to do it, and I hope everyone thinks this is fair.

The recipients of the cloths will be:

1. Mr. Ball
2. Mom and Dad, TX
3. Lenny and Kevin
4. My mother
5. Ms. Charupee
6. Num's family
7. Ms. Thim
8. Polly and Jim
9. The Californian donor
10. Mr. Em of Wattanapanich

Please forgive me for making the decision for all of you.

For those in the US, yours will be sent with Kathy when she comes visit in September.

Details of the Project

WHAT Panpim WILL DO:
1. soliciting funds from family and close friends*
2. collecting donations and bookkeeping
3. consulting with the school director for specific needs
4. buying the needed books
5. affixing contributors' names and messages to the books
6. packing
7. shipping the books to the school director

*Close friends who are SINGLE are my intended target. In truth, EVERYONE is welcome.

WHAT YOU WILL GET:
1. Thank-you letters from the recipients/users of your books
2. A joy in your heart knowing that you help some kids build their lives and future

CLARIFICATIONS:

1. ALL contributions (donors' nicknames and amount) will be posted here.

Every shipment's spending entries (book titles, copy numbers, and prices) will also be presented here.

[I am sorry that your donations here will not be tax-deductible. Should you want that feature, please donate to other FORMAL and registered charitable organizations.]

2. The money will be spent on BOOKS and BOOK SHIPPING. If there is a manageable number of us, I will pay for POSTAGE STAMPS to send thank-you letters from students to each respective donor myself.

3. Each donor's contribution will be used on the number of books that is close to finishing up the whole donated amount. Since books are heavy, a part of donations will be set aside for the shipping cost. I will do my utmost best to keep it to the lowest.

4. Outstanding balance will be kept to a minimum and will be added to the funds for the following semester. It will not be put in my personal account.

5. EACH SEMESTER, workbooks to be used in WRITING and CALCULATING will be purchased NEW.
Reusable textbooks will be passed down from previous years until a revised edition is released.

6. To protect your privacy, ONLY your first name and lastname's initial--not your address--will be shown on the books unless you wish otherwise. Thank-you letters, addressed to you, will be collected by the school director and sent to me. I will sort and forward them to you.

7. Workbooks will be purchased new from a Department of Education bookstore next to Mah Boon Krong Center.

8. Required readers in the curriculum will be purchased new initially. They however should be passed on to students' juniors and will be used in subsequent years. Replacements will be purchased based on the school director's consideration and judgment or when the revised edition is issued.

9. Books for supplementary reading will be purchased used, or new when necessary, from discout book stores in Jatuchak Market.

10. Appropriate subject matter is determined by me. (Trust me, I'm a teacher.) NO improper cartoons or novels will be on the list.

11. Any used books you want to donate are always welcome. Please call to arrange with me.

12. Teaching aids for teachers are secondary to books for students. (Teachers are knowledgeable and can technically improvise. Students' needs are priority.)

13. Books will be shipped in book rate. It is likely that they will be sent via commercial couriers that charge bulk packages at a cheaper rate than Thai Postal Service Inc. does. One day when the postal service is de-privatized and is out of the Stock Market, I will re-consider using its services.

14. I am responsible for travel expenses to and from various bookstores and post offices. (Call me if you want to go book-shopping with me.)

15. Only when the total sum of donations is considerably large then a new school will be considered for our assistance.

16. I shall NEVER make profit from this project.

For those of us who travel a lot and encounter needy schools, if you think they need our help, please try to get the necessary information.

Such information includes
1. Names and addresses of the schools
2. Names and phone numbers of contacts, preferably school directors or principals
3. Level of education the schools provide (e.g. up to grade 6, or up to grade 9 or mathayom 3)
4. Enrollment or number of students in each grade
5. School's specific needs (teaching aids, writing utensils, etc.)

Please pass the info on to me. Your other observations would also be crucial.

My friends and family who want to help, please call me at 089-056-0017.
